What is Pulmonology?

Pulmonology is a branch of medicine focused on the study and treatment of respiratory diseases and disorders. Pulmonologists are medical specialists who are trained in the diagnosis and management of conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, and sleep-related breathing disorders, among others.

Procedures Performed in our Pulmonology Department-

  • Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT): Measures lung function to assess breathing capacity and diagnose respiratory conditions.
  • Bronchoscopy: Allows direct visualization of the airways for diagnosis and treatment of lung disorders.
  • Thoracentesis: Removal of fluid from the pleural space surrounding the lungs to relieve symptoms and aid diagnosis.
  • Biopsy: Sampling of lung tissue for pathological examination to diagnose lung diseases, including cancer.
  • Chest X-ray and CT scan: Imaging techniques used for the diagnosis and monitoring of lung diseases.
  • Polysomnography: Sleep study to diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea.
  • Pleural biopsy: Removal of tissue from the lining of the lungs to diagnose pleural diseases.
  • Lung volume reduction surgery: Surgical procedure to remove damaged lung tissue in patients with severe emphysema.
  • Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS): Minimally invasive surgical technique used for diagnosing and treating lung conditions.
